Sensei's Weekly Blog
21 April 2010 by Paul CampbellA student asked me 'Sensei do you remember your first fight in a
competition?, Sensei answered yes I do it was in Wednesbury
somewhere and I remember I was fighting against an opponent who was
massive, we bowed to begin the bout and he promptly kicked me in
the head with a Mawashi Gerri( Round House Kick) - damn I thought
that was a lucky kick, the award was given to my opponent we bowed
again and he repeated the technique kicking me full in the face -
Now I was in trouble this guy had the measure of me.
I was scared and felt out of my depth but the thought came to me
that he tried to take me out the game with the second attack but I
stood firm. I saw my instructor Sensei Simmons who had come to
watch me standing alongside the area and felt a surge of confidence
flow through me, we bowed again and I jumped into the air and
punched my opponent Tobi Gyaka Zuki straight in the face knocking
him onto the floor, now I felt good.
One of my senior students at that time Lincoln Williams came to me
and said 'Sensei his coach I have just heard him tell the guy your
fighting to kill you', I went back to face my opponent snarling as
I stood in front of him 'Ousha' I shouted trying to gee myself up
to contiue my fight with Goliath, at that he turned around and
waved his arms to say it is not worth his while to continue.
Sensei's Proverb: Courage is not about not having fear, it is about
us judging whether something else is more important than our
fear.
It was I had my senior student and my Instructor watching I
could not lose.
