Paul started Goju Ryu Karate at Dudley
College at the age of 12 and after 6 months, when the club shut,
Paul found himself doing bits of Wado Ryu, Lau Gar Kung Fu and
boxing. The latter he did for two years. Paul never really
concentrated on one art until he was 17 and started Shotokan Karate
under the tutelage of Mick Simmons in Pensnett. Mick heralded from
Clive Tandy, via Asano Sensei and Kanazawa Sensei. Since then Paul
has through the years trained many students throughout the country
including RAF and Army personnel. Paul has taught locally as well as abroad, in places like Germany, USA and Jamaica Paul believes that Karate should be available to everyone, regardless of what area they live in or social background. Paul has a tradition within the club for strong discipline and etiquette and through this the club has gained respect world wide, culminating with Paul being on the front cover of Traditional Karate Magazine in 1997.
In 1994 Paul won the Black Belt Heavy Weight Division in the Jamaican Open Championships in Kingston and in 2002 led his team to victory to take the coveted team gold. Paul currently holds the grade of 6th Dan Karate Black Belt and is Chairman of the United Styles Association (USA) which has some 1400 members. In 1999, Paul was recognised for his dedication to Karate and was inducted into the Combat Martial Arts Hall of Fame. Paul has struck an excellent balance with developing his Karate Clubs and his education, which is paramount to him, culminating in him obtaining a BA (Hons.) Degree in Leisure, Recreation and Sports Management from Birmingham University in 2006. Paul promotes 3 championships each year February sees Part 1, UK Open Championships, then May his own United Styles Association championships then in September part 2 UK Open Championships, these attract competitors from all across the world.
